In the Classroom
Education is the key to creating an environment of acceptance for those who have a mental health condition and by reducing its stigma to help the youth come to understand, respect, and empathize with those who live with the condition.
The Stigma Stomp initiative is a unique concept that specifically addresses the important issue of stigma, which is discrimination against those who have the condition, and creates barriers for those with a mental disorder. Since our youth are blossoming and open to forming their own opinions, they will make the ‘right’ decisions with the ‘right’ information.
This interactive presentation for youth in Grades 7-12 includes:
- introduction of the topic of mental health, with powerful impacting images of stigma around the subject of mental illness
- sharing a personal vivid story of living with and managing bipolar disorder
- brief Q&A period featuring The Mental Health Tree Map as a visual handout providing directions to resources for help to be found within the community. Please note: The tree map is currently under development.
The presentations are created to be delivered in a classroom environment as they are interactive and personal.
Presentations to date have been given at SJ Willis Secondary, Pacific Alternate School, Pacific Technical School, and Esquilmalt High. If you are interested in having a presenter come to your school please contact us as we would be happy to explore that possibility with you.
